The National Security Council has decided to vote on a full trade embargo with Turkey as normalization of relations is not expected.
Importers circumventing the ban use Palestine as an intermediary, paying a 10% commission. Turkish exports of cement, steel and furniture to Palestine have increased significantly, prompting talk of permanently severing trade ties.
According to the proposal, the ban will be formalized by a special decree of the Minister of Finance, starting from a three-month period. A committee of ministries will advise the minister on the goods prohibited from being imported from Turkey and the duration of the decree. The decision is intended to support a direct ban on imports of goods from Turkey and to mitigate the difficulties voiced by lawyers.
The date for a review of the full embargo on trade with Turkey is set for August 18, 2024. There is a long-standing practice of using Palestine to circumvent import bans, which has led to a significant increase in Turkish exports to the country.
The proposal to ban trade with Turkey has already been discussed previously and is now undergoing a new detailed assessment.
