US President Joe Biden spoke by phone with the leaders of Qatar and Egypt on Friday, August 23, insisting on the importance of reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, while negotiators in Cairo tried to resolve problems that were preventing an agreement, Reuters reported.

The White House statement noted that Biden discussed diplomatic efforts with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

The Cairo talks were described by the White House as “constructive” and all sides were called on to come together to implement the proposed agreement.
