US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the extension of two American carrier battle groups in the Middle East, Pentagon General Patrick Ryder said in a statement after speaking with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
“The secretary reaffirmed Israel's right to self-defense and the United States' determination to support its defense against Iranian threats,” Ryder added.
They also discussed Israel's defense against Hezbollah attacks and efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and free hostages. There are currently two U.S. Navy strike groups in the Middle East, the Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, and the nuclear submarine Georgia.
The US is strengthening Central Command due to threats from Iran and radical groups ready to strike Israel.
