On September 2, 2024, at 23:48, two oil tankers – the Saudi Arabian-flagged Amjad and the Panama-flagged Blue Lagoon I – were attacked in the Red Sea off Yemen, Reuters reported, citing its sources.
Three missile attacks hit the Blue Lagoon I tanker 70 nautical miles northwest of Yemen's northern port of Salif on Monday, according to the Joint Maritime Information Centre, which is run by international naval forces to track Houthi attacks.
According to the center, the tanker was targeted because other ships belonging to its company had recently visited Israeli ports. “The entire crew is safe. The vessel suffered minimal damage and does not require assistance,” the military emphasized.
Yemen's Houthis claimed responsibility for hitting Blue Lagoon I with multiple missiles and drones, but did not mention the Saudi tanker. The ships were close to each other when the attack occurred but were able to continue sailing without serious damage or casualties.
The Amjad, a supertanker with a capacity of 2 million barrels of oil, is owned by Saudi Arabia's national shipping group Bahri. The Blue Lagoon has a maximum capacity of 1 million barrels. One of the sources said the Amjad was likely not the target of the attack.
On August 21, the oil tanker Sounion was attacked by two boats and hit with three projectiles in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. In November, the Houthis launched aerial attacks with drones and missiles in solidarity with the Palestinians during the Gaza war, sinking two ships, capturing another and killing at least three sailors.
