The CIA chief called on Israel and Hamas to reach a compromise and sign a new ceasefire agreement in Gaza. America will present the text of the agreement in the coming days, but success depends on the political will of both sides. Burns noted that 90% of the agreements have already been reached, but difficult issues remain that require difficult decisions.
It is unclear how close the parties are to an agreement, but Burns said there are only 10% of the issues that require serious attention. Netanyahu, however, has denied these claims. The CIA will continue to work with mediators to protect the lives of hostages and Gazan civilians because there is no alternative.
Along with MI6, Burns stressed that they were using all their leverage to stabilise the situation and reach a ceasefire. Their colleagues were working hard to end the 11-month hell and bring home all Hamas hostages.
