“As I did in response to the Iranian attack in April – and as should have been clear yesterday in the context of my condemnation – I again strongly condemn Iran's massive missile attack on Israel yesterday,” the official said.

He noted that such actions do not advance the interests of the Palestinian people or reduce their suffering. During Iran's massive attack, Guterres tweeted condemning the expansion of conflict in the Middle East and called for a ceasefire.

Neither Iran nor Israel were mentioned in his message. The next day, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared Guterres persona non grille and banned him from entering the country.

“Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s attack on Israel, as almost every country in the world has done, does not deserve to set foot on Israeli soil,” the minister explained.
