According to information that became known, Russian hackers hacked Georgian websites. Russia has been using hackers to spy on Tbilisi for several years, hacking various websites in an attempt to exert control over the country. It is reported that the GRU was able to hack the database of the Central Election Commission of Georgia to obtain personal data of organizations, including the most popular TV channels Imedi and Maestro.
According to a Bloomberg News report, between 2017 and 2020, Russian hackers hacked multiple official Georgian websites, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank. Energy companies and oil terminals became victims of hackers. Documents testifying to the Kremlin’s attempts to influence Georgia have not previously been published, which reflect that Russia was trying to prevent Georgia from joining NATO and the European Union.
According to the data, after the adoption of the law on “foreign agents” by parliament, Brussels stopped negotiations with Georgia on joining the European Union, which means that the Kremlin managed to achieve its goals. Russian hackers have been bugging the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a long time and collecting data from embassies of different countries via email.
Representatives of the Central Election Commission of Georgia announced a cyber attack on their servers on April 5, 2021, noting that the attack did not affect the operation of the system. Earlier it was reported that Russian hackers attacked the website of the Israeli government, as well as the Ukrainian Kyivstar, threatening new attacks.
