President-elect of the United States Donald Trump will serve as chief negotiator on the Gaza crisis.

Despite this, Trump's new White House press secretary, Caroline Leavitt, said the newly elected US president would reimpose harsher sanctions on Iran, fight terrorism and support Israel.

“President Trump will serve as America's chief negotiator and will work to bring home the innocent civilians who are being held hostage,” she said.

The US president-elect will also likely inherit the crisis and responsibility for seven Americans held by Hamas, four of whom are believed to be alive.

Some Israeli officials say Trump, who has said he wants the war in Gaza to end quickly, will have much more leverage and influence over Netanyahu than incumbent US President Joe Biden.
