The US military conducted an airstrike against a Houthi command and control facility in Yemen. These events took place on Monday, December 16th. The strike targeted the center for coordinating operations of the Houthis, who are responsible for attacks on military and commercial ships in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
US and British forces regularly strike Houthi targets in Yemen in response to their attacks on commercial shipping in those regions. The Houthis say their actions are aimed at courts linked to Israel to express solidarity with Palestinians during the Gaza conflict.
The United States has announced its intention to maintain a military presence in the Red Sea region to protect civilian ships from attacks carried out by militants backed by Iran. In mid-November, the US military carried out a series of airstrikes against Houthi weapons depots in Yemen in response to terrorist attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. In early December, US Navy destroyers shot down missiles and drones fired by the Houthis at military and commercial vessels in the Gulf of Aden. Such actions are aimed at protecting ships and preventing possible attacks on them.
