The Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Azman, together with the commander of the National Guard of Ukraine Oleksandr Pivnenko, lit Hanukkah candles, Moshe Azman reported on the social network X on December 27.
“Hanukkah reminds us of the victory of light over darkness, and this message is more relevant today than ever for Ukraine. At this difficult moment, the National Guard is one of the shields protecting the people of Ukraine, giving them confidence in a safe future,” the recording says.
On December 25, Jewish communities around the world began celebrating Hanukkah. In the capital of Ukraine, on Independence Square, the largest Hanukkiah in Europe was installed.
Earlier, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky reported that for the first time in the modern history of Ukraine, a large Hanukkah appeared near the destroyed Golden Rose synagogue in Lviv.
Hanukkah, also known as the “festival of light,” commemorates the cleansing of the Jerusalem Temple and the restoration of services in it, which occurred in 165 BC. The date of the holiday is determined according to the traditional Jewish calendar. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days.
From December 7 to 15, Jews around the world celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday of light and goodness.
