UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Israel to cease fire in the Gaza Strip, where actions against the Palestinian group Hamas continue. He criticized Tel Aviv for “hundreds of thousands of tormented and traumatized civilians.”
This was reported by the UN news service.
“This must stop. Gaza is littered with debris and bodies, and in some cases, there are serious violations of international law. The level of mortality and destruction in Gaza is unprecedented in recent history,” said the UN Secretary-General.
Guterres also described the situation in Gaza as a “catastrophe,” where people are experiencing hunger. He emphasized the need to ensure the supply of food, water, and medicine to the area, as well as Israel’s agreement to “significantly wider access for humanitarian organizations.”
“I again call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, ensuring unhindered access for humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the unconditional release of [Israeli] hostages,” noted the Secretary-General. “No more obstacles. No more lies.”
The latest report from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission notes that in Ukraine, July saw the highest number of civilian casualties since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Last month, 286 civilians were killed, and another 1,388 were injured in 18 regions of the country due to the war.
According to UN data, about 40% of all casualties resulted from the use of long-range weapons, including missiles and loitering munitions.
