In Moscow, an international song contest “Intervision” has been announced, which is intended to be an alternative to Eurovision amid Russia’s exclusion due to the conflict in Ukraine. The organizers emphasize “traditional values,” but ignore current war themes, replacing them with anti-Western messages.

Initiator and History of the Contest

The project was initiated by Putin, who is effectively reviving the Soviet tradition of such events.

“Intervision” was already held in the 1960s-1980s, aimed at cultural unification of the USSR’s allies, both in Europe and beyond. The Kremlin plans to use this format as a tool of foreign policy.

Contest Participants

This year, performers from 23 countries are participating. For example, Belarus will be represented by 21-year-old Nastya Kravchenko, a former “X-Factor” participant. From China, 40-year-old pop singer Wang Xi, known as Elvis Wang, will perform. Russia has set its sights on Shaman — an artist who has already brought patriotic themes to audiences at concerts, including in North Korea.

Composition of Participants

The participating countries include Belarus, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Qatar, South Africa, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates, USA, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

Israel is not listed among the participants.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan refused to participate after an incident with its passenger plane, shot down by Russian military in December last year, resulting in the death of 38 people.

Replacements Among Participants

Initially, the USA was to be represented by Brandon Howard, but he withdrew due to family circumstances. His place was taken by Australian singer Vassy. Interestingly, after the announcement of her participation, official sources removed mentions of LGBT support, as this movement is considered “extremist” in Russia.

Statements from Organizers

Moscow representatives assure that the contest “will be free of perversions” and aimed at promoting “spiritual, family, and universal values.” The winner will be chosen by an international jury formed by the Kremlin, highlighting state control over the project.

Reaction to the Contest

In Ukraine, “Intervision” was characterized as an element of Russian propaganda and a means of concealing the Kremlin’s aggressive policy. Despite deteriorating relations with the West, the organizers managed to place contest advertisements in Times Square in New York.

Future Plans

It is noted that at the beginning of 2025, Putin signed a decree on holding the “Intervision” contest. The document was officially published. Additionally, the state Spanish broadcaster announced its withdrawal from Eurovision 2026 in Vienna if Israel is not excluded due to the conflict in Gaza.
