In Egypt, a new round of negotiations has begun to resolve the conflict in Gaza. Among the participants are influential American figures Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Representatives from Qatar and Turkey have also joined the process, aiming to advance Donald Trump’s peace plan.

Key Players

Qatar, playing an important mediating role, announced that the negotiations have entered a “critical phase.” Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani has arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh. Along with him, Kushner and Witkoff, representing the USA, are participating in the discussions. Israel is represented at the negotiations by Ron Dermer, advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Turkey by intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin.

Diplomatic sources report support for Trump’s 20-point plan by the parties, but disagreements remain. Hamas opposes disarmament and demands clarifications on the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Disputes also concern the role of the Palestinian Authority, which Arab countries want to see in managing the enclave, while Netanyahu is against it.

Progress and Challenges

Some progress has been made, but Arab states are concerned about changes in Trump’s plan regarding troop redeployment and the role of the Palestinian Authority. Hamas is ready to release 48 hostages and relinquish control of Gaza, transferring control to a committee of Palestinian technocrats. In exchange, Israel must release more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners, including Marwan Barghouti, which is causing the most disputes.

Prospects and Hopes

Despite the difficulties, the participants in the negotiations are ready to seek compromises for the sake of stabilizing the region. On Monday, October 6, negotiations began in Sharm El-Sheikh on the US peace plan. Discussions include a ceasefire, troop withdrawal, and hostage exchange.

The first day of negotiations ended amid hopes for an agreement on the 20-point plan. Donald Trump noted Hamas’s desire for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, while Netanyahu expressed a positive attitude towards the deal.
