During negotiations with Donald Trump, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky raised an issue that goes far beyond ordinary diplomatic agreements. Kyiv insists on security guarantees for a period of 30 to 50 years — as a minimum condition for sustainable peace.

According to Zelensky, the American side promised to consider such a format. The idea was not rejected, which means the discussion continues at the highest level.

Currently, the agreed documents feature a term of 15 years with the possibility of extension. This proposal came from the USA and has already been approved by the presidents and working teams. In Kyiv, they emphasize: for a country that has been living in a state of war for almost 15 years, such a horizon seems too short.

Zelensky directly asked the question that became central in the negotiations: if security guarantees are the foundation of future peace, why should they have a limited duration. From his point of view, it is precisely long-term commitments that create a deterrent effect and make any agreements real, not declarative.

The Ukrainian president suggested to Trump to consider the option of guarantees for 30, 40, or even 50 years. He emphasized that such a decision would be historic — not only for Ukraine but for the entire system of international security. According to Zelensky, Trump took the arguments seriously and stated that he would think about this formula.

At the moment, the parties speak of a high degree of readiness of the agreement package. The military component of the guarantees is agreed upon 100 percent. Joint guarantees of the USA and European partners — approximately 90 percent. The economic block, which should accompany security, is in the final stage.

Kyiv emphasizes: without strict and long-term guarantees, any further steps are impossible. This concerns both the peace plan and the potential discussion of politically sensitive topics, including the format of settlement in the east of the country — but only under the condition of a long-term ceasefire from Russia.

After the meeting in Florida, Trump announced “95 percent readiness” to complete the negotiations. He reported consultations with key allies in Europe and confirmed that he had a conversation with Putin. At the same time, the American leader noted: the most difficult and contentious issue remains the future of Donbas.

Zelensky, in turn, stated that the peace plan of 20 points is agreed upon by approximately 90 percent. He placed special emphasis on the unprecedented level of security: the conditions of military assistance and the format of guarantees, logically close to NATO’s Article 5, are fully agreed with the USA.

A new round of negotiations between the leaders of Ukraine and the USA is scheduled for December 29. For Kyiv, this is an attempt to secure safety not for one political cycle, but for decades ahead — so that it works regardless of personalities and elections. In this context, long guarantees are considered a factor of stability not only for Ukraine but for the region as a whole, including Israel and the Eastern Mediterranean.
