The Serbian Parliament has approved a project that has already sparked debates and discussions far beyond the Balkans. On the site of the destroyed building of the Yugoslav Army General Staff in Belgrade, demolished in 1999 during NATO airstrikes, a luxurious hotel complex will appear.

The project is led by Jared Kushner — the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump and one of the most talked-about investors in recent years.

The city, where the walls hold the echoes of wars, is preparing for a new architectural symbol.

Last year, Serbian authorities removed the site’s protected heritage status, paving the way for a long-term lease of 99 years with Kushner’s company Affinity Partners. The contract is estimated at approximately 500 million dollars, and it has become the reason for protests, accusations of document forgery, and heated debates in parliament.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, known for his long-standing friendship with Trump’s circle, publicly supported the idea, stating that the project will bring jobs and investors to Belgrade. The opposition, however, sees this as a step towards erasing historical memory — turning a symbol of national tragedy into an “American entertainment center.”

Meanwhile, Jared Kushner’s name is back in the headlines. The holder of the “architect of peace” reputation after participating in the Abraham Accords returns to the global arena — now as an entrepreneur connecting politics and business. His appearance in Serbia is seen as an attempt by the US to strengthen cultural and economic influence in the Balkans.

Belgrade today stands at the crossroads of eras: between the pain of the past and the gloss of new globalization. The decision to build a world-class hotel here can become both a symbol of reconciliation and a reminder of the cost of progress.
