The risk of a wider conflict in the Middle East has diminished slightly in the near future after a standoff between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah without further escalation.
But Iran remains a serious threat as it considers attacking Israel, a US general said. US Air Force General Charles Brown, who chairs the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Reuters after a trip to the Middle East.
He noted that the Hezbollah attack was just one of two major threats to Israel that have emerged in recent weeks. Iran has also threatened to attack over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. “How Iran responds will determine how Israel responds, which will determine whether there is further conflict or not,” Brown said.
Brown also warned of the risk from Iran's military allies in countries such as Iraq, Syria and Jordan attacking US troops, and from Yemen's Houthis targeting shipping in the Red Sea and even flying drones toward Israel.
