The international human rights organization Amnesty International stated on December 5, 2024 that it has enough evidence to claim that Israel “committed genocide against the Palestinian people during the Gaza war.”
The 296-page report details actions by Israeli forces and authorities that could be classified as acts of genocide under the UN convention, including “mass murder, infliction of serious bodily and mental harm, and the creation of conditions aimed at the destruction of Palestinians.”
Amnesty International noted that despite Hamas' actions, Israel is still responsible for violations of international humanitarian law. These accusations were announced in a statement by the organization's secretary general, Agnès Callamard.
The organization claims that Israel “carried out widespread and indiscriminate attacks, destroyed civilian infrastructure, forced mass displacement of Palestinians, and prevented the delivery of humanitarian aid.”
Despite the danger Hamas poses to civilians, Amnesty International recalled that Israel has an obligation to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has already responded:
“The vicious and fanatical organization Amnesty International has once again produced a fabricated report, completely false and based on lies.
On October 7, 2023, the terrorist organization Hamas committed a massacre against Israeli citizens that constituted an act of genocide. Since then, Israeli citizens have been attacked daily from seven different fronts.
Israel defends itself against these attacks in full compliance with international law.”
