Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that the situation with energy infrastructure has reached a “critical point.” The country is facing a massive energy crisis, causing government agencies to operate on reduced schedules and schools and colleges to switch to online learning. The crisis was caused by years of sanctions, mismanagement, deteriorating infrastructure, excessive consumption of resources, as well as targeted attacks by Israel. The power outage caused industrial plants to halt production and left highways and shopping centers in darkness.
The country's president expressed regret to citizens and promised to pay more attention to the situation next year. Iranian officials report a natural gas shortage of about 350 million cubic meters per day due to a surge in demand for the fuel due to falling temperatures. Authorities were faced with a choice between continuing to supply gas to homes or sending it to power plants that generate electricity.
By the end of December 20, 17 power plants had ceased operation, and the rest were only partially operational. The state power company warned of possible widespread power outages for days or weeks. The economic damage from the crisis has already reached “tens of billions of dollars.”
