Military analyst and reserve officer of the IDF, Igal Levin, commented on a recent article by The Guardian, which stated that the US was seeking an alternative to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky six months ago. According to him, they tried to establish contact with Valeriy Zaluzhny, then the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but these efforts were unsuccessful.

Levin noted that this information was not news to him. He mentioned that six months ago, he emphasized that the United States often resorts to coups and government replacements when they do not align with their interests.

“Israelis understand well the nature of American politics and how their strategy works. They know how to conduct coups and replace defiant leaders,” said the analyst.

It is important to note that Zaluzhny then decided not to communicate with the Americans and preferred a meeting with Zelensky in London, thereby showing the unity of the Ukrainian leadership in wartime conditions. According to Levin, Washington seriously considered the possibility of removing Zelensky but abandoned this idea for two reasons: the lack of a suitable alternative and the decisive position of European leaders who expressed support for the Ukrainian president.

“If the Europeans had decided to abandon Zelensky and Ukraine as a whole, the US, even after the failure with Zaluzhny, could have continued their plans for a change of power,” Levin added.

He emphasized that the solidarity of the UK, France, and other countries unexpectedly prevented the US from implementing their plan.

The expert also noted that this situation illustrates Kyiv’s diplomatic resilience. The modern Ukrainian leadership has demonstrated the ability to maintain international support even in the most challenging times. Levin suggested that historians will later perceive this moment as one of the most critical episodes of spring 2024, when the US could have become not only a neutral player but also an adversary for Ukraine.
