On Monday, December 30, the 1/16 finals of the WTA 250 tournament took place in Auckland (New Zealand) between Naomi Osaka (Japan, WTA 57) and Lina Glushko (Israel, WTA 220).
During the game, an anti-Israel protest occurred, with slogans like “Free Palestine,” “Israel a terrorist state,” and “Israel out” being chanted. The match was interrupted for several minutes because of this, but the organizers were unable to remove the protesters as they were outside the court.
Lina Glushko is the only Israeli tennis player in the top 500 in the world rankings.
Glushko has Ukrainian roots; her parents Sergei and Olga moved from Ukraine to Israel in 1999, a year before Lina was born. The meeting ended with the victory of Naomi Osaka with a score of 6:4, 6:4.
