October 6, 2025, around noon, in the Kovpakovsky district of Sumy, a Russian drone attacked a perinatal center where women, infants, and medical staff were present at the time. This was reported by the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleg Grigorov.
The strike hit the roof of the building — a fire broke out, which rescuers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine managed to extinguish quickly. The flames did not spread, but the very thought that the strike was on a maternity hospital was a shock to the residents of Sumy.
Evacuation and Miraculously Saved Lives
In the morning, a few minutes before the attack, an air raid alert was announced in Sumy. This gave the medical staff a chance to react in time — all patients and staff were evacuated to shelter.
At the time of the strike, there were 166 people in the building:
35 women expecting a child,
11 newborns,
and 120 hospital staff.
Thanks to the coordinated actions of doctors and rescuers, no one was killed. A 60-year-old staff member received assistance on-site — she had a stress reaction to the explosion. No more injuries were reported.
Consequences of the Attack and Reaction
Photographs of the destruction have already been published by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. The images show a pierced roof, traces of fire, and broken windows. Nearby are incubators and medical equipment covered in ash.
The situation remains tense: the region is regularly subjected to drone and missile attacks, and each new alert forces doctors to repeat the rescue scenario. Hospitals in the region have enhanced evacuation protocols, and the basement of the perinatal center has already been converted into a temporary shelter for pregnant women and infants.
Symbol of Resilience
The perinatal center in Sumy has become a symbol of how Ukraine protects not only cities but also the very idea of life. The medical staff who saved mothers and children during the attack are not just witnesses of the war but its quiet heroes.
And when drones strike maternity hospitals, Europe and the whole world see: this war is directed not only against the army but also against the future.
