US President Joe Biden approved a secret strategic nuclear plan for the United States in March, according to the American publication The New York Times.
While the containment policy previously focused primarily on the USSR, the new US nuclear strategic plan now focuses on China, which is expanding its nuclear arsenal faster than other countries.
The Pentagon believes that China's arsenal will rival those of the United States and Russia in size and variety within the next decade.
The White House had not previously announced that Biden had endorsed a revised strategy, called Nuclear Employment Guidance, that also for the first time aims to prepare the United States for possible coordinated nuclear challenges from China, Russia and North Korea.
An unclassified memo on the strategy review is expected to be sent to Congress for approval before Biden's presidency ends, Reuters reports.
The geopolitical theory of deterrence, developed by American diplomat George Kennan in the 1940s, is inextricably linked with the concept of mutually assured destruction. It ensures the maintenance of peace with the understanding of the inevitability of retaliation against the enemy in the event of a first strike.
