China has expressed support for Iran over its threats against Israel.

China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security and national dignity, Wang Yi said during a conversation with Acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani.

The diplomat condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, stressing that it encroaches on Iran's sovereignty and threatens stability in the region. Iran and Hamas accused Israel of carrying out the attack that killed the Hamas leader.

Israel has not accepted responsibility for the killing, raising the risk that the conflict between Israel and Hamas could escalate into a full-scale war in the Middle East. Iran has promised to “severely punish” Israel for the incident, which it believes is hindering peace talks in Gaza and undermining regional stability.

“China supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and national dignity in accordance with the law and in efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and is willing to maintain close communication with Iran,” the Chinese foreign minister said.

Iran is preparing for a massive strike on Israel in response to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah's top military commander Fuad Shukr.
