On August 14, 2024, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Ankara to discuss a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The presidents discussed “the massacres committed by Israel in the Palestinian territories” and discussed steps toward a permanent ceasefire. Erdogan expressed disappointment at the silence of some Western countries as the death toll in Gaza mounted, calling the attitude “unacceptable.”
