Iran has stepped up its efforts to interfere in the November U.S. election and increase polarization in the country, Microsoft researchers said in a report, using hacking and creating fake news sites that target far-left and far-right citizens.
Among the Iranian-founded news networks is Nio Thinker, which began as a site devoted to the war between Israel and Hamas and then began publishing articles about the upcoming US elections. It has been merciless in its criticism of the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.
A sister site, Savannah Time, has also been created, targeting conservatives and discussing Republican politics and LGBTQ issues. Some of these sites use artificial intelligence to plagiarize articles from American sites.
The company said Iranian groups had launched influence campaigns on election-related topics to stir controversy and influence voters. Russian interference via social media also continues. Microsoft will not endorse any presidential candidate, unlike Elon Musk, who backs the owner of X and Trump.
