The Gaza ceasefire talks that took place in the Qatari capital Doha on Friday, August 16, have been suspended. Negotiators will meet next week. The United States, Qatar and Egypt, which mediate between Israel and Hamas, announced the suspension of the talks. Working groups will continue technical work on the details of the agreement's implementation, including humanitarian provisions and issues of hostages and detainees.

The talks were assessed by the mediators as serious and constructive, and the atmosphere during the meeting was positive. The US presented an interim proposal to both sides to fill the gaps and facilitate the implementation of the agreement. The talks were not attended by representatives of Hamas, which had previously refused to participate despite US calls.

New talks will be held in Cairo before the end of next week to conclude an agreement under the terms set out on Friday. On August 9, a joint statement was issued by US President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel el-Sisi and Qatari Emir Tamim al-Thani, in which the countries called on Israel and Hamas to resume ceasefire talks on August 15 in Doha or Cairo. A Hamas spokesman in Lebanon said the group would not participate in the talks due to Israel's unwillingness to achieve a complete end to aggression.
