On Thursday, October 31, 2024, German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock announced the closure of three Iranian consulates in Germany in response to the execution of German-Iranian citizen Jamshid Sharmad. Consulates are located in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich. “We have repeatedly and unequivocally made it clear to Tehran that the execution of a German citizen will have serious consequences,” Burbock emphasized. She also announced Germany's intention to seek the introduction of pan-European sanctions against those responsible for Sharmad's death.
Burbock condemned Iran for using Sharmad's execution as justification for its actions and for playing politics with the hostages. According to her, the murder of Sharmad against the backdrop of events in the Middle East indicates the unfair behavior of the Iranian regime. Diplomatic relations between the countries are already at their lowest level, she added.
As a result of the closure of the consulates, 32 employees will lose their right to reside in Germany and will have to leave the country if they do not have German citizenship. In January, Iran executed four men accused of planning sabotage at a defense plant and having links to the Israeli Mossad.
