The UN Secretary-General has called on Israel to cease military action following the launch of a counter-terror operation that has left Palestinians dead. He “condemns the loss of life, including children, and calls on Israel to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians and use lethal force only as a last resort to protect life.”
Guterres expressed deep concern about the events in Judea and Samaria, stressing the need for restraint by security forces. Dangerous developments in the region “undermine the Palestinian Authority and exacerbate the violence.” The UN Secretary-General stressed that only “an end to the occupation and a political process” can lead to a resolution of the conflict and an end to violence.
The United Nations intends to continue working “with all parties to the conflict” to de-escalate the situation and ensure stability in the region.
