In the world, there are countries that live by unique calendars. The Gregorian calendar, familiar to many, does not determine the passage of time everywhere. When traveling, one can literally find themselves in the past or future.
Different Calendars, Different Eras
In Europe and America, it is now the year 2025 according to the Gregorian calendar. This calendar originates from the supposed year of Jesus Christ’s birth. However, in countries with fewer Christians, alternative chronologies retain their significance.
Even in such countries, the Gregorian calendar is often used in everyday life, while local systems remain for cultural and religious purposes.
Islamic Calendar
In Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Iran, the Islamic calendar is officially used, where it is now the year 1403 or 1447. The date is determined by the Sun or Moon, which affects fluctuations. In other Muslim countries, the Gregorian system dominates, while the lunar one is used for holidays.
Chinese Calendar
In China, the Eastern chronology, the year 4722, is applied for cultural and esoteric purposes. Officially, the country lives by the Gregorian style, but interest in Eastern astrology remains.
Buddhist Calendar
In Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, the Buddhist calendar, the year 2568, is used alongside the Gregorian. It counts from the moment Buddha reached nirvana and is relevant in festivals and ceremonies.
Jewish Calendar
Jews count from the moment of the world’s creation according to the Torah, and it is now the year 5785. In Israel, as in other cases, the Gregorian system prevails in business and everyday affairs.
Japanese Calendar
Japan lives in the seventh year of the Reiwa era, which began with Emperor Naruhito’s ascension to the throne in 2019. The country’s history is divided into eras of emperors’ reigns, but the Japanese are aware of global time.
Cultural Mosaic of Time
These calendars are not just numbers but a reflection of cultural and historical heritage. They create a unique atmosphere, allowing a deeper understanding of the traditions and customs of peoples. In this diversity lies a special beauty that makes the world richer and more interesting.
