That is why the United Jewish Community of Ukraine and its partners are conducting such initiatives. They not only preserve the memory of the tragedy, but also unite Jews and Ukrainians in the fight for humanism, opposition to aggression and protection of those who suffer today.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day established by the UN General Assembly in 2005 and celebrated annually on January 27. The date was not chosen by chance: it was on this day in 1945 that the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated.
The purpose of this day is to remember the millions of Jews who died during World War II and to draw attention to the need to stand against anti-Semitism and all manifestations of hatred.
Program of events in Odessa
NGO “Odessa Center for Holocaust Research” in collaboration with partners and with the support of the Charitable Foundation “Memory. Dignity. Freedom” will hold memorial and educational events in Odessa for International Holocaust Remembrance Day:
- January 20, 14:30 – film screening “Pianist” at the Beit Grand Jewish Cultural Center.
- January 22, 14:30 – film screening “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”.
- January 26, 17:00 – play “Kaddish” at the Odessa Academic Puppet Theater.
- January 28, 14:30 — opening of the exhibition of Pavel Kozlenko “Last stop. Auschwitz Platform”.
- January 29, 14:30 – film screening “Sophie's Choice”.
