The Ukrainian authorities reported that this year “the pilgrimage to Uman during the Tishrei holidays will not take place” – Barak Ravid. The reason for this is security concerns due to the ongoing aggression of Putin’s Russia. This information was provided by the ultra-Orthodox site bhol with a reference to the news service of Channel 12 ITV.
This announcement was a blow to many Israelis who traditionally travel to Uman for Rosh Hashanah. As journalist Barak Ravid reported, a senior Ukrainian official stated:
“For security reasons, pilgrims will not be able to come to Uman at this time.”
He also noted that in Kyiv, there is “dissatisfaction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and threats of restrictions on the arrival of pilgrims during the holidays.”
“Moreover, the Ukrainian authorities are concerned that Netanyahu did not congratulate Ukraine on Independence Day. They also demand economic assistance from Israel and an increase in the number of police officers to maintain order during the pilgrimage,” the publication writes.
The ban particularly affected followers of the Breslov Hasidim, for whom the annual trip to Uman holds great spiritual significance. At the same time, Rabbi Natan ben Nun, head of the “Ihud Breslov” association in Uman, reported that negotiations with the Ukrainian authorities are ongoing, all necessary approvals have been obtained, and preparations to meet the pilgrims are proceeding as planned. He urged believers not to panic and to continue preparing for the trip.
It is also worth noting that a group of Knesset members, both from the opposition and the coalition, appealed to the finance committee with a request to discuss the allocation of 10 million shekels for organizing flights to Uman for 50,000 Breslov Hasidim gathering for Rosh Hashanah.
According to “Maariv,” the Prime Minister and the deputies agreed on the merging of budgets from five ministries: transport, foreign affairs, internal affairs, Jerusalem, and traditions, each of which will allocate two million shekels.
The deputies emphasized that funding private trips with state funds is unacceptable, especially when it concerns young people not serving in the military. They considered the allocation of funds for flights to Uman as a flagrant violation of public trust, especially in conditions of reduced resources for healthcare and education.
While tens of thousands of Israelis remain outside the country due to the “People as a Lion” operation, the government allocates 10 million shekels for the pilgrimage to Uman, which is perceived as discrimination against other citizens.
