Iran has likely begun preparing for war against Israel and has requested advanced air defense systems from Moscow, reports The New York TimesTwo Iranian officials familiar with military planning told reporters that Tehran had asked Moscow to provide radars and air defense systems.
The publication recalls that on August 5, former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in Iran, where he met with the country's President Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as the commander of the Iranian armed forces, Brigadier General Mohammad Bagheri, who is leading the planning of military strikes against Israel.
At a meeting with Shoigu, Pezeshkian stated that Iran aims to deepen relations with Russia as a strategic partner.
“Russia is one of the countries that supported the Iranian people in difficult times,” the country's new president said.
Pezeshkian also noted that Israel's “criminal actions” in the Gaza Strip and the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week “are clear examples of the violation of all international laws and rules.”
“The joint positions of Iran and Russia in promoting a multipolar world will certainly lead to greater global security and peace,” the Iranian president said.
In turn, Shoigu stated that the Kremlin is ready “for full cooperation with Iran on regional issues.”
