On February 8, three Israeli citizens-Ohad Ben-Am, Or Levy and Eli Sharabi-were freed from captivity of Hamas. Their return after 491 days shocked the Israeli society. Exhausted, weakened and barely capable of standing on their feet, they became a symbol of survival and suffering. These personnel returned the memory of long -forgotten times, reminding the faces of prisoners of concentration camps, as well as the fate of the Ukrainian military returned from captivity in Russia.
Shock and reality
The process of transferring hostages was broadcast live. The first to the stage was taken by Ohad Ben-Ami. He walked with difficulty supported by the armed militants of Hamas. It seemed that he either saw poorly, or did not see at all. He was followed by Eli Sharabi and Or Levy, who also moved with difficulty and needed support.
Families of hostages were shocked by their appearance. Pale, emaciated faces and blurred glances spoke of the most difficult conditions of content. But most of all it was shocked by the fact that terrorists forced the hostages on the stage to publicly thank Hamas for “care”, “protection from bombing” and even call for the liberation of all Palestinian prisoners.
Propaganda tactics
This performance, arranged by Hamas, had one goal – to imagine itself in a profitable light in front of the world community. The hostages have become part of this cynical show. However, doctors who examined them after liberation did not need words: their condition confirmed the exhaustion, dehydration and traces of long deprivation.
Parallels with Ukrainian events
These personnel caused painful associations with Ukrainian military and civilian, returned from Russian captivity. The same empty views, exhausted bodies and pain that cannot be hidden.
Look at these eyes. They are the same as the Ukrainian prisoners.
Russia and Hamas act the same way, turning human fates into a propaganda tool. Ukrainian prisoners are forced to publicly plead guilty to cameras, as well as Israeli hostages.
We will not forget.
Liberation operation
The release of hostages was the result of complex negotiations with Hamas with the participation of international intermediaries. Negotiations were conducted in conditions of strict secrecy, and each detail of the operation was agreed in advance. The Red Cross acted as an intermediary in the process of transmission, which went to Dir al-Balach.
The hostages were delivered to Israeli hospitals, where they were provided with urgent medical care. The condition of all three remains serious, they need prolonged treatment and rehabilitation.
General pain and support
The story of Ohad, Ora and Eli is a tragedy that has become part of the general struggle for freedom and the right to life. Israel and Ukraine should remember this pain and support each other in difficult times.
