The operation began with an airstrike, after which Israeli special forces entered the complex in Syria. During the raid, documents and equipment were seized and the plant was then destroyed, the correspondent Nir Dvori reported on September 12.
Israel officially denies any involvement.
Greek Eva Koulouriotis, a specialist in Middle East affairs, claims that the plant that was blown up is linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and supplied weapons to Hezbollah. It is located just 6 km from the city of Masyaf.
Local residents heard explosions that occurred around 11:00 a.m. in the Masyaf area on the Syrian-Lebanese border. Israeli special forces used an airstrike and then entered the complex to seize important materials and destroy the plant.
Israeli special forces landed on the plant using helicopters and rappel ropes, where they destroyed an Iranian surveillance center and captured two Iranians. A skirmish with the plant's security ensued, which reportedly resulted in Syrian casualties.
An operation was also carried out against a military research center used to produce chemical weapons. We recall that in early August, Israel struck in Lebanon, killing Hamas commander Samer Mahmoud al-Haj, responsible for attacks on Israel.
Yigal Levin wrote about this:
“Regarding the information being spread in the media that Israeli commandos allegedly penetrated a Syrian missile plant and destroyed it. As with any cool story, there are already a bunch of details of varying degrees of yellowishness: from captured Iranians to the destruction of a Russian radar and even an alleged shootout between Israeli and Russian soldiers.
But tales are tales, and facts are facts. Let me just remind you that since 1948 Israel has been at war with Syria (which then attacked it with the aim of destruction), and during all this time there have been countless operations, raids, large and small wars, etc.
Israeli army raids into Syria occur periodically even today. For example, here is footage of one of the operations, which was declassified and made public several years ago. Israeli units entered Syria, destroyed certain objects, being 500 meters from the positions of the Syrian Arab Army, and safely returned.
Why weren't the objects destroyed by artillery or aviation? As the Israeli army itself reported at the time, the raid was carried out by fighters from the 1st Golani Infantry Brigade (plus combat engineers – where would we be without them) with the aim of testing a real combat situation in case of a major war and the beginning of an offensive maneuver in Syria.
This raid was then censored for publication, but that does not mean that it was the only one. A year earlier there was another raid, which was much less covered in the media, and this is understandable, because there were already specialists there, and they went much deeper into Syria than the “Golanchiks”. And in 2014 (or earlier, I write from memory) UN observers complained that the Israeli army ran into Syria up to 10 times in one summer alone on various business.
So yes, the Israeli army does indeed go to Syria if necessary, but what, where, when, how much – these are all, as they say, nuances.”
