The partnership between African-Americans and pro-Palestinian activists is rapidly unraveling. Influential supporters on both sides are beginning to clash over differences in their self-proclaimed fight. The conflict between the two exposes fragile fault lines on the intersectional far left. Arab activists are demanding that their black colleagues “stop campaigning for Kamala Harris because of her support for the ‘genocide’ in Gaza.” Harris has suggested that Israel has a right to defend itself but called for a ceasefire.
Harris has been critical of Israel's actions in Gaza, unlike President Biden, and is likely to promote a cease-fire. While her opponent, Trump, supports a strategy of “total victory” for Israel. Such strategies may make sense to Arab-Americans, but will not reassure African-Americans.
