Service in the IDF
From 1967 to 1973, Netanyahu served in the Israel Defense Forces, in the elite unit “Sayeret Matkal.” He participated in a raid in Beirut in 1968 and the Inferno special operation in Jordan. In 1969, during Operation “Bulmus-4” on the Suez Canal, he narrowly escaped death.
In 1972, he took part in Operation Isotope to free hostages on board Sabena Flight 571. In the same year, he received recognition from General Mordechai Gur.
In 1973, he interrupted his studies at MIT to participate in the Yom Kippur War. After that, he was discharged to the reserve with the rank of captain.
Yonatan Netanyahu: The Tragedy of a Brother
Yonatan, Benjamin’s older brother, died in 1976 during Operation “Entebbe” in Uganda, freeing hostages. His death became a significant milestone in Benjamin’s life.
Political Career and Influence
After returning to Israel, Netanyahu began a political career. He was elected Prime Minister in 1996, then again in 2009. He held positions as Minister of Defense, Finance, and Foreign Affairs.
