UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “deep concern” after Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah carried out the largest series of cross-border attacks.
In late August, Israeli jets attacked dozens of targets in southern Lebanon in what they described as a preemptive move to forestall a possible larger-scale attack. Hezbollah responded by firing hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel, according to the BBC.
Guterres warned that the actions were endangering civilian lives and undermining regional security. The United States said it was working to prevent further escalation, and both sides said they had no interest in continuing the fighting.
Iran has promised a tough response to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month, blaming Israel. But an IRGC spokesman said Iran's response could take time, showing it is in no hurry to retaliate, raising fears of a regional war in the Middle East.
Israel's ambassador to the United States, Michael Herzog, said his country could avoid a direct attack from Iran by leveraging the US position in the region.
