The international cultural project “Kyiv, Jews, Zionism and the 20th Century” has revealed several cultural phenomena to its participants over the past two weeks.
Researcher Mikhail Kalnitsky and project participants visited the Brodsky Synagogue, the central synagogue of Kyiv, built in 1898 with funds from L. Brodsky according to the design of Georgy Shleifer.
They also delved into the history of Zionism in Kyiv and explored the global cultural phenomenon of the Kultur-League, which has become a source of innovative ideas in art, design and publishing.
This is what he writes about “United Jewish Community of Ukraine”.
Participants learned that the successful advertising poster was created by their compatriot El Lisitsky, and the camouflage as an image was developed by Vladimir Baranov-Rosine, who also created the kinetic painting. The brutalism style, in which the complex of faculties of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv was built, was introduced by the architect Mykhailo Budilovsky. Issachar-Ber Rybak created the first documentary film depicting the terrible Jewish pogrom in Kyiv, in which his father died.
Walking around Pechersk allowed the participants to feel like residents of Kyiv at the beginning of the 20th century, and passing by the Profitable House with the trading house and the factory of Joseph Kimayer, they could smell the fresh expensive wood from which the best furniture was made. This became possible thanks to the project speaker Olga Shamrai.
Yakov Marshak was one of the first fighters for women's rights in the jewelry profession, involving women in the more delicate processes of jewelry creation.
David Margolin was the first to implement a factoring loan and contributed to the development of tram service and artesian water supply in Kyiv. Participants learned all these unique facts from the project mentor Natalia Likhitska.
This project is important because it helps restore and preserve the Jewish cultural heritage of Kyiv and Ukraine, showcasing the contributions of Jewish figures to world art and culture. For Israel and Ukraine, it strengthens ties to the history and culture of the Jewish community, emphasizing the importance of preserving and studying cultural heritage in a contemporary context.
