“Pro-Palestinian rally” in Kyiv turned out to be fake — Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation

Russian propagandists have spread information about an alleged rally in support of Palestine in the center of Kyiv.

Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation reported on August 2, 2024 that The information spread on social networks about a pro-Palestinian rally in the center of Kyiv is a fake created by the Russian side.

Russian propaganda claimed that the protest on Sophia Square was in response to the assassination of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. They used video recordingwhich, as Ukrainian experts have found out, was made back in 2021 at another pro-Palestinian rally organized by pro-Russian structures.

Propagandists have confused St. Michael's Cathedral with St. Sophia's Cathedral. Firstly, this is because there is now broken Russian equipment and installations about the war there.

The Center emphasizes: “The purpose of such Russian propaganda is to discredit Ukraine and provoke interethnic and interfaith conflicts in our country. Trust only verified sources of information.”

In Ukraine, any mass events are prohibited during martial law.

“The Center verified this information and found out that it is not true. The video recording, which was supposed to confirm the news, was made back in 2021 at a pro-Palestinian rally, among the curators of which were pro-Russian organizations. The purpose of such leaks by Russians is to discredit Ukraine and provoke interethnic and interfaith conflicts in our country,” the GPD noted.
