This summer, posters bearing the Italian and Russian flags appeared in Italy calling for an end to support for Ukraine. According to CNN, they included the words “Russia is not our enemy” and “Stop spending money on weapons for Ukraine and Israel. We seek peace and reject war.”

The posters were first seen in northern Italy in June and have since spread to cities including Verona, Modena, Parma, Pisa and southern Calabria. Their creators, the group Sovranita Popolare, have received funding from organisations protesting the COVID-19 lockdown.

The Ukrainian embassy in Rome expressed dissatisfaction with the posters and called for a review of the permit for their placement. Diplomats also expressed concern about the audacity of Russian propaganda in the city.

The reaction to the posters varied across Italy. In some places, they were removed by local authorities, while in others they were left until the payment deadline. In Rome, the mayor's office ordered the posters to be taken down because they used the city's name and official symbol on them.
