On December 8, a frigate and a cargo ship left Tartus for the Mediterranean Sea. The Russians began to withdraw ships from the Syrian base in connection with the overthrow of the regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad.
According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, they are also transferring the remaining weapons by plane from the Khmeimim airbase. The situation was aggravated by the rapid process of overthrowing the regime, leading to the flight of the Russian contingent from Syria; Damascus is now under the control of the rebels – the residence of the dictator, government buildings and the central office of national television.
After the loss of control over Damascus and the continuation of the offensive operation of the opposition forces, the Russian army began to withdraw its warships from the naval base in Tartus, which Assad had previously given to Moscow for use.
On December 8, the frigate βAdmiral Grigorovichβ of the Black Sea Fleet and the cargo ship βEngineer Trubinβ of the Northern Fleet left Tartus for the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the Russians are transferring the remains of their weapons and military equipment from Syria by air from the Khmeimim base.
βAfter the capture of Damascus, opposition forces are moving towards the coast – Russiaβs likely loss of military bases in Tartus and Khmeimim will finalize the Kremlinβs defeat in the Middle East,β the GUR noted.
