Russia is discussing extending its military bases in Syria. The expert expressed his opinion on the possible prospects of this decision

According to expert David Sharp, the presence of Russian military bases in Syria in the previous format is no longer possible. Currently, Russia is negotiating with the new leadership of Syria in order to maintain its two military bases in this country.

The former rebel leader in Syria, Abu Mohammed al-Julani, took a pragmatic approach, declaring an amnesty for some supporters of the Assad regime. At the same time, he stated his preference for a “businesslike approach” to Russia, despite the possibility of attacks on its military bases.

Sharp pointed out that the forces that overthrew the Assad regime could take revenge on the Russian military, but this would not bring them any benefit for the future. However, maintaining Russian bases in Syria in their previous form is becoming impossible.

According to the expert, the Russian military base in Syria at the airfield can continue to operate in a limited mode and serve as a transit point for operations in Africa or Libya. Also, the port in Tartus can be preserved as a place to service Russian ships.

A few days ago, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller noted that the future of Russian bases in Syria may be in jeopardy due to Russia's destructive actions in recent years. The fall of the Assad regime is considered a strategic failure and could negatively affect Russian military bases in this country.

Business Insider emphasized that Moscow had a strategic foothold in the Middle East thanks to its military bases in Syria. It is important to remember that the possible destruction or relocation of Russian bases could change the entire geopolitical balance in the region.
