Strike on Train in Sumy Region

On October 4, 2023, Russia carried out an attack on the railway station in the city of Shostka, Sumy region, resulting in about 30 people being injured.

According to the head of the regional military administration, Oleg Grigorov, drones of the Russian armed forces struck around 11:50 a.m. The first drone attacked the locomotive of a suburban train, and the subsequent strike hit the Kyiv — Shostka train, which was at the station during evacuation.

The moment of the strike was captured on video by eyewitnesses. Among the injured, according to the Minister of Communities and Territories Oleksiy Kuleba, are both passengers and railway workers. The head of the Shostka administration, Oksana Tarasyuk, reported that among the injured are three children. By 1:00 p.m., it was known that eight people had been hospitalized.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the incident, declaring that this strike represents a terrorist attack that cannot be ignored:

“Russian servicemen could not have been unaware that they were attacking civilians. This is an act of terror that the world cannot ignore. Every day Russia takes lives. Decisive measures need to be taken.”

The comment is accompanied by calls for international actions against the aggressor.

Simultaneously with the attack on the station, the Russian army shelled the infrastructure of the Sumy region, leading to power outages in Shostka and partially in the Shostka district, as reported by Sumyoblenergo.

Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation under the criminal article on the violation of the laws and customs of war.
