The ban on the activities of the UN agency for helping Palestinian refugees (UNRWA or UNRWA) raises objections from the Russian Foreign Ministry. Moscow reacted to the Knesset's decision to ban the activities of UNRWA due to the participation of its employees in terrorist activities and the spread of hatred in schools controlled by the agency. According to the Russian agency, Israel “has not provided evidence of the involvement of UNRWA employees in terrorism,” although the agency itself previously admitted that some of them were members of Hamas.
A statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that “a ban on UNRWA activities would be a form of collective punishment for millions of Palestinians.” For them, the agency was the main and indispensable source of support in the fields of humanitarian assistance, education, medicine and social services. The need for UNRWA's existence is emphasized against the backdrop of the difficult humanitarian situation in the region.
It is emphasized that the activities of UNRWA have been approved by the UN and are an integral part of international efforts to assist Palestinian refugees. Russia expresses the hope that “Israel's decision will not affect the work of the agency and will not harm the Palestinian population in need of support and assistance.”
