Event organizers – Cinema Club “Created in Ukraine”
The name of the film, a joint production of Ukraine and France, means “town” in Yiddish. Shteitl – is a typical Jewish settlement that existed in Eastern Europe before World War II. Director Adi Walter removed the letter “E” from the title – its absence symbolizes the emptiness faced by the characters of the film.
Film synopsis: June 1941. In a Jewish shtetl in the Lviv region, preparations for the wedding of a butcher’s son and a rabbi’s daughter are in full swing. The intrigue of this seemingly ordinary event lies in the fact that the bride, Yuna, loves another man, and he, Mendel… plans her kidnapping. Meanwhile, a Nazi death squad is approaching the shtetl.

🎞 This is a Ukrainian-French project by director Adi Walter, deeply intertwined with our realities.
📜 This is the story of one day and night in a shtetl in the Lviv region, 24 hours before the Nazi attack. The basis of the film is the story of the city of Sokal in the Lviv region, destroyed by the German army.
🎬 Plot: Mendel, a young man who had previously moved to Kyiv to pursue cinema, returns to his native shtetl. Cinema is his greatest passion, but he wants to reunite with his beloved Yuna, the rabbi’s daughter. They develop an escape plan, as Yuna is supposed to marry Hasid Foli, who hopes to become the next rabbi and leader of the shtetl.
🏙️ The shtetl is not only a Jewish settlement, but also a miniature Jewish universe, full of contradictions, questions, and issues that are more than relevant today.
🔄 In most films, memories are shown in black and white, while the present is in color. Here, it’s the opposite. The explanation is in the film, and be attentive during the viewing.
🎬 The consultant for the film was American expert Eli Rosen, known for his work on the Netflix series Unorthodox.
🎞️ This is the only Ukrainian film where Ukrainian and Yiddish coexist fully.
🎥 The filming took place near Kyiv six months before the full-scale invasion.
🏆 The film premiered at the 2022 London Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the Rome Film Festival.
🇮🇱 The Israeli premiere of the film took place in the spring of 2024 at the Ukraine Aviv Festival.
🎥 The film was one of the contenders for the “Best International Feature Film” category for the Oscars from Ukraine.
