Sources familiar with the ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas say the appointment of Yahya Sinwar as head of the Politburo is complicating the talks because of his tough demands. Sinwar wants a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, an end to hostilities and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Sinwar is against Palestinian Authority officials running Gaza and the deployment of a multinational force in the region after the war, the sources said. His priority is the release of high-profile prisoners, including Marwan Barghouti and Ahmed Saadat, which he is not prepared to compromise on.
Sources say Sinwar's demands were conveyed through his assistant Khalil al-Haya to intermediaries from the US, Egypt and Qatar. Sinwar himself insists on his conditions, despite the possible protracted resolution of the situation and opposition from the Israeli authorities.
