On September 13, 2024, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League (LAS) Contact Group on Gaza will meet in Madrid. Hakan Fidan, the Turkish Foreign Minister, will participate in the group, as well as high-ranking representatives from various countries, including EU High Representative Josep Borrell.
The meeting will focus on ending Israeli attacks on Gaza and other Arab settlements, as well as efforts to recognize Palestinian statehood. An important aspect will be ensuring a permanent ceasefire, as well as organizing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The issue of releasing Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity is not on the agenda.
The Contact Group was established in November 2023 to find ways to resolve the conflict in the Middle East and provide humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Despite the difficult relations between Israel and Egypt over control of the Philadelphi Axis, the group's contact continues without the participation of Israeli hostages.
