The European Union has expressed deep concern about the recent escalation along the Blue Line. In a statement, EU High Representative Josep Borrell condemned on behalf of all EU countries attacks on UN missions, especially attacks by the Israeli Defense Forces on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, which resulted in the casualties of peacekeepers. These actions are a violation of international law and require an immediate stop.
Measures must be taken to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property and respect the sanctity of UN premises at all times. It is important that the Israeli authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the attacks on UNIFIL, which plays an important role in the stability of southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL troops and personnel from sixteen EU member states work in challenging environments to ensure international peace and security. The EU also expressed concern about Hezbollah firing rockets into Israel and IDF strikes into densely populated areas of Lebanon, causing heavy civilian casualties.
The EU calls for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and invites all parties to commit to full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701. This statement was made in light of the ongoing conflicts and violations between Israel, Lebanon and the UN.
