The General Staff of Ukraine announced the ineffectiveness of the spring-summer offensive of Russian troops. In the presented report, the General Staff of Ukraine pointed out that the results in the reports praise the Russian military command, which is trying to “pass off wishful thinking as reality.” In light of the report by the Chief of the General Staff of Russia, August 31, 2025, Valery Gerasimov, statements about captures and the creation of “security zones” are disputed.
According to the Ukrainian side, the spring-summer campaign practically did not bring the desired results for Russia, as not a single major city was taken. The statement about “security zones” in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions was criticized by the General Staff as a way to hide the real consequences and losses, which have exceeded tens of thousands.
According to Ukrainian data, over the past six months, the Russian army has suffered heavy losses, including 210,000 killed and wounded servicemen. The General Staff expressed the opinion that this is the only confirmed achievement of Russia this year.
The dispute over the results reached the level of criticism when Gerasimov’s report was called a model of “Kremlin lies.” It is emphasized that the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to hold combat positions, and propaganda cannot obscure the failure of the offensive strategy.
The press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, noted that the European Union actively hinders peaceful initiatives put forward by Trump. The contrast between the approach of European countries and the Russian authorities is noted, which, according to Peskov, complicates the situation. He focused on dissatisfaction with the actions of the EU and the lack of mutual readiness for negotiations on the part of Kyiv.
According to Peskov, Russian diplomacy “strives for a political resolution of the conflict, but no actions have followed from Kyiv.” It is expressed that Europeans “hinder peaceful negotiations and do not want the conflict to end,” which, according to him, has “negative consequences for Ukraine.”
The European Union, in turn, continues to actively support Ukraine and insists on including the Kyiv government in discussions on the peaceful resolution of the war. An important aspect remains ensuring Ukraine’s security after the end of hostilities. For example, the possibility of deploying peacekeeping contingents in the country is actively considered, despite Russia’s disagreement with the presence of foreign troops.
