The Israeli army will remain in the Gaza Strip for years to come and fight new Hamas militants in the territory, a senior Israeli minister has said.
Comments by Avi Dichter, Israel's Minister of Agriculture and member of the Israeli Security Cabinet, confirm the long-term presence of Israeli troops in Gaza. Israel has no plans to install another administration to govern the territory's 2.3 million people or begin reconstruction there.
“I think we will stay in Gaza for a long time. “I think most people understand that Israel will be there for several years, as it was in the West Bank, when the army sometimes moved in and out of the territory, possibly leaving troops at strategic points such as the Netzarim corridor,” he said. Dichter.
International commentator Simon Tisdall noted that a truce between Hezbollah and Israel could lead to more horror and death in Gaza. A ceasefire in Lebanon will allow the Israeli army to concentrate in Gaza with even greater force.
Last month marked the one-year anniversary of the war in the Gaza Strip, which began with the Hamas attack on Israel.
